What is a Vizsla?

Not everyone has heard of Vizslas so the following extract gives some information on the breed....

Their character is defined by their Hungarian name, Vizsla, meaning alert and responsive.

Dexter & Ditto Oct 06The Vizsla is a distinctively different canine.  It is a superior family dog as well as a true hunting companion, accepting the role of protector and friend and demanding the degree of respect and rank that distinguishes it clearly higher than that of a "dog". All Vizsla's are members of a very exclusive, distinct breed that is part-clown, part-athlete, part-companion, and part-genius.

First and foremost the Hungarian Vizsla will expect to be a member of the family. They are good-natured dogs that are very keen to please. They are not the type of dog to own if you expect to shut your dog away and not allow it to be with you. Elegant and aristocratic in their bearing they have a highly developed sense of play and fun and can correctly be described as an aristocratic clown! The breed is a very 'touchy' dog, meaning they will want to be touching you often and this will include with both paws and mouth. The paws are used to grab you around the legs, cuddle round the neck and sometimes just to put one gently on your lap when you are sitting on a chair.

The mouth of the Hungarian Vizsla is an important communication tool. These beautiful and versatile dogs will bark, whine, sing, talk and make a whole range of vocal sounds - this is not to say that the Vizsla is a noisy dog that will keep your neighbours awake, but rather a dog with a host of ways that it uses to 'talk' to you, and in fact is renowned for its silence when hunting. When they are feeling very affectionate the Vizsla will often gently take your hand or arm in their mouth as they walk beside you or sit with (on) you. They also love soft toys and many of them regularly are seen carrying their 'teddy bear' wherever they wander around the house.

After surviving countless wars and centuries of limited and selective breeding, the Vizsla was re-bred from near extinction and combines the finest in beauty, character and hunting ability with a strong desire to please.  He is lightweight and agile, running with effortless grace.   The Vizsla should remain true to type whether in the show ring, field or at home with the family, representing all physical characteristics which have distinguished him for centuries.

Vizsla's are wonderful, incredible, great dogs, but not suited to everyone …

The breed is demanding of your time, your energy, and your affection. Vizsla's crave human affection. They will worship the ground you walk on, but they also want to own your soul. There is an old Hungarian saying, "If you own a vizsla it lives on top of your head." They are "in your face" a lot of the time.

They are sensitive and are likely to fold up and quit if you come down too hard on them. They are capable of pretending to have their feelings crushed if they don’t want to do something or think you aren’t giving them due respect. It is hard to tell the difference. Their flair for the dramatic can be award winning.

Vizsla's are experts at the game "What Can be Gotten Away With?" and incredibly clever at never being caught.

Vizsla's want to be the love of your life and are jealous of anything that keeps them from being the center of your world. Because of this, they can make real pests of themselves, wanting to be in your lap, your face, your bed, and closer to you than any other household pet or human. Rarely does a vizsla get ugly about being the center of attention, but all are extremely persistent!

Often known as Velcro Vizsla's due to their tendency to "attach" themselves to their owners!
